How to choose a rug. Hand tufted rugs vs hand knotted rugs.

Knotting a rugSometimes, when
I talk with clients, I start to talk about hand tufted and hand knotted rugs and
immediately I realize that they don’t know the difference between each other.

The first
step to decide which kind of rug you want, in terms of colours and style, is to
decide the budget and the quality you want to buy.

It is like
to go to buy a car without knowing if you want a BMW or a cheaper car.

I can
understand that few people are specialist on rugs, on its features and on its origins,
but as you take information about hi-tech devices, cars or whatever you are
buying, as well you should make it with rugs but usually this does not happen.

Between the
quality and the technique there can be a huge price difference; it is enough to
say that some rugs become art pieces, bought from collectors and others have a definitely
affordable price.

What is the
main and the first difference to look at?

The production
technique.

Hand
knotted rugs, as the name says, are made by knots made by hand and tufted rugs
are made with a device (the so called tufting
gun
) that inserts the yarn on a cloth base.

The final
result is completely different. Hand knotted can last a whole lifetime, hand
tufted has a rather limited lifespan. If the latter get damaged or deeply dirty
it must be replaced.

HandtuftingHand tufted
rugs are the most common on the market, you can have a good quality for a
reasonable price but if you want an important modern rug or a luxurious
contemporary rug you should think of buying a hand knotted rug.

Follow my
advice.
